snapshot: Dick Carmichael
The
Department of Business Management welcomes Richard Carmichael as the newest
member of its faculty. Prof. Carmichael, who has a one-year appointment
with the department, has a B.S. in Economics, 1970; an MBA in Financial
Management, 1972; and a Ph.D. in Business Administration, 1997. He joins
Washington College most recently from North Carolina, but he knows the
Chesapeake Bay region well, having previously worked in Baltimore as a
Branch Chief for the Small Business Administration, and Budget Manager
for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. "I spent
ten years in Baltimore," he notes, "so moving to Chestertown,
on the other side of the bay, was like coming home." Carmichael's
other professional experiences include serving as Divisional Controller
for Manufacturers Hanover and as a Vice President for Marketing and Planning
for Bank America.
Carmichael teaches finance, investments, entrepreneurship, and management
information systems (MIS). While he values his business and government
experience, he's especially delighted to have the opportunity to teach
college students. "Being among young people," he says, "keeps
you thinking young."
Carmichael's broad research interests are well-suited to a liberal arts
environment. His recent publications include two books on economics: The
Evolution of Economics (Richard D. Irwin, 1995) and Politics and Economics
in America (Krieger, 1997). Prof. Carmichael and his wife have two sons,
one of whom is currently completing his education at the Naval Academy
in Annapolis.
