Casey's Kangaroo Cabs redux

Kenton photoLast spring biz@washcoll .edu brought you the story of Casey Kenton, a Washington College business major who was spending his summers running a bicycle taxi business at Dewey Beach, DE. We thought we'd give Casey a chance to update us on how this past summer went for him and his business. Here's what he reports:

"The summer was bad and good for Casey's Kangaroo Cabs. The good news is that I paid the business off on the date the money was due. The bad news was the weather—a lot of rain that dampened business and profits. It seemed like it rained every other day in June and July. Still, I managed to pay off the loan (with interest) that I'd taken to buy the business on July 18th, a year after I'd borrowed the money. Most of my profits went to helping my parents pay for tuition here at Washington College (my brother is enrolled now, too).

One of my big sources of revenue—advertising on the bikes—went much better this year than last. I had ads on every bike, and my advertisers agreed to renew for next summer, so I won't have to put time into selling ads at the start of next summer. (I spent two weeks before Memorial Day this year working to sell advertisements.) All in all, the summer went pretty well—except for the weather.

After I graduate in May 2001, I'm planning on going back to Dewey to run the bikes for one more summer. I'll probably run the business until October, and then try something else—traveling around the U.S. or Europe, enlisting in the Air Force, or starting another business at the beach. Right now I'm just worried about my senior thesis and graduation."
